Stanley Bentworth is not all that tough. Previously a homicide cop, he drank his way out of a job and now runs a one-man private eye agency. When a wealthy financier needs an anonymous blackmailer found in a life and death situation, Stanley seizes the chance to earn a fee.
If he fails, the blackmailer outs his client to the mob, giving the client a one-way ticket to the landfill with Stanley an unwilling passenger on that ride.
He knows he must not fail, no small feat given that Stanley Bentworth is not all that tough.

On a whim, I had downloaded and started reading the 3rd installment of this series, 'Clueless', not knowing what to expect. However, after reading the first 15% of that book, I liked it so much that I stopped and went back and bought the first two of the series so I could read them in order. This one introduces us to Stanley Bentworth, a former homicide detective now working as a self-employed private investigator. Stanley is just an average run-of-the-mill kind of guy...not another swaggering, macho, superstud alpha male. He's not a tough guy (by his own reckoning), he's not a ladies man, he's not the cleverest or smartest or anything close to it. He's got a self-effacing sense of humor, and an apathetic demeanor about most things in his life, and that's what makes these books so refreshingly different and entertaining. The story itself is still serious and dramatic, with people being killed, threatened, and assaulted, but it's told in such a smooth (and humorous) manner that makes it a very enjoyable read. Wide variety of characters, with wit and sarcasm aplenty. This may not be an epic novel per the likes of John Grisham or Michael Crichton, but it is a very fun and entertaining book that I thoroughly enjoyed.Product details

On the Street Where You Die Stanley Bentworth mysteries Book 1 edition by Al Stevens Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I just finished this book on and was glad to learn it was the first in a series as I can't wait to read more of these. Much of what I thought has already been posted by others who seem to have enjoyed the book as much as I did. If I could change one thing it would be Stan's drinking, to me it kind of gets in the way of the plot at times but not drastically. Of course part of his back story is he was fired as a Police detective in part because of his drinking, but despite the drinking he still gets the job done. He's fiercely loyal to his family and friends and his "gal friday" Willa who oversees his office with utmost efficiency and charm to boot. Nephew and wannabe future detective Rodney was a surprise and I look forward to seeing more of him. Having a proficient computer whiz/hacker in the mix can make things very interesting at times and it sort of makes Rodney Stan's secret weapon. The pacing of the plot was very smooth and advanced quickly. Almost too quickly and before I knew it the story was over. The Characters were interesting and well developed. Every author writing his first fictional detective novel would hope his effort came off as well as this one I think and I can't wait to read the rest in the series, I'm already started on number 2. I think I've found my new favorite private detective.
Good first book. Well paced and enjoyable to read. I think I got it for free. The next book is only $2.19. I would easily out this into the $1-3 range as a quality piece of work for that price range.
My only beef with the book is that Stanley couldn't have solved anything without his nephew. It felt like a bit of a cheat. But for the price of the book and for how enjoyable it was to read, I can live with it.
If you can get this book for less than $2 you won't be wasting your money.
There is sexual innuendo and conversation if you are looking for a perfectly clean book. Nothing any adult hasn't heard before and it isn't dwelled upon.
On the Street Where You Die is written in the Mickey Spillane style, with pithy, self-deprecating sentences, very dry jokes, comments about drinking, having no money and the job not providing money, and general descriptions about the "seamy underbelly" of a city's population.
Stanley Bentworth is a Private Investigator, and of course, a retired cop. He has some friends still on the force, but the brass does not much appreciate his finer qualities. This story involves a case that a secretive financier brings to him involving blackmail. Buford Overbee, it seems, is a former mob collector, who turned for the Feds, then got into witness protection, at least for a while. He is being threatened to be outed for who he is to the mob. Stan takes care of most of this situation inside of a day with the help of his computer whiz nephew, Rodney. However, then the real story begins.
Stan gets in deep trouble on multiple fronts, including the mob, witness protection, the local homicide squad, the Army, and even maybe Homeland Security. Several people end up dead, since it is a murder mystery, and several different story threads start weaving together. Through it all, the witty wisecracks keep coming.
Structurally, this is a well-written book. Spelling, grammar, tenses, homonyms, all are well done. Since the author has been a technical writer, I would expect no less from him. The pace is quick and enjoyable, and the book is a fairly fast read. If you enjoy murder mysteries that aren't dry, slow, and laden with deep explanations, this book is for you. It's an enjoyable romp into murder, if such a thing exists. For me, it is a high 4-star effort by the author, Al Stevens. This is a worthy book to put into your "to be read" stack.
I enjoyed reading this book. Most refreshing part is that the protagonist is not a big, tough guy and he still gets the job done, even when he gets in over his head. Usually I have the ending figured out before the writer finally spells it out. An easy read, not a lot of big words that I needed to look up and written by an American in American English. This is a book written in a current setting, with some technology twists and a small amount of violence and sex that add to the value of the read.
