Art Pollard's story deserves to be told, from his birth to his untimely death. From a small hydroplane on Oregon's Umpqua River to micro-midgets and modified stock cars on a half-mile oval in Roseburg, Oregon. A popular super-modified champion in the Western States in the 1960s - to ultimately the Championship Car Series - achieving the pinnacle of racing at the famed "Brickyard" in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was a well-written book that answered a lot of questions I had about Pacific Northwest auto racing in the 1960s. The author, Bob Kehoe, gave good accounts Art Pollard's life and the auto races he competed in; with inclusion of race summaries and some bio info of Pollard's competitors/friends during his career.It's astounding to think that Pollard rose through the ranks of short-track super-modifies, to end up driving the most advanced open-wheel oval track race car of its era, the STP Lotus-56 Turbine, in the 1968 USAC Champ Car season. There have been more men that have walked on the moon than have competitively raced an open-wheel gas turbine race car in major motorsport race series.
Pollard followed up the 1968 season with competitively driving Champ cars for two victories in 1969; one in a naturally aspirated powered racer, which was an extremely rare accomplishment during that turbocharged-engine era of Champ Car racing.
There were some inconsistencies and an error or two with some race results; but Kehoe himself wrote a postscript, in the book, to point out he could be faulted with a few shortcomings with the finished product. For an author to make such an admission is admirable, which did well to neutralize me with belaboring those scant aspects in the book.
Overall, the book is a great read!

It is ok but not the best source book
A very good book. If you're an Indy Car fan you need this. If you like racing then you will love this book. Well written, good info.
The Pollard family were neighbors and life long family friends. My sons had heard me speak of Art all of their lives, so for Christmas, I gave them each this book. Their grandfather, my dad is in the book...one of Arts' early friends in Roseburg, Lee Holmes.
The book brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank you Bob Kehoe for writing it!
The book sort of covered Mr. Pollard's life in a general sense. Never going into great detail on anything. Most of his USAC years were covered like "started ninth, spun, and finished 16th". No details on why he and Granatelli split, or his work with children.
I was familiar with the racing name Art Pollard.
After reading this book I learned about a Great man, that
also happened to be a participant in a sport I'm passionate
to learn about what it takes to be a success.

As a friend of Arts, I was really excited to read this book! Some of the things in the book I did not know. A lot of the things just brought back a lot of great memories! Whether you knew Art or not… It’s great reading!
When most people think of Art Pollard they think of him driving the Lotus 56 turbine in the 1968 Indianapolis 500.
He was much more than that, as Bob Kehoe's book shows. From the rivers and short tracks of Oregon to the speedways of the USAC Championship Trail, Pollard's story is one of speed, daring, and accomplishment.
Along the way he made a lot of friends and did his best to help others, which made his tragic and untimely death while practicing for the 1973 Indianapolis 500 even more painful to those who knew and loved him.
Art Pollard on the race track and in life proved that nice guys don't necessarily finish last. This book is a testament to that man.
